The Kingdom of Denmark allowed in the special autonomous region of Greenland between 2013 and 2023 the harvest of 30,764 harbour porpoises, 4,772 narwhals, 2,956 long-finned pilot whales, 2,457 belugas, 1,787 common minke whales, 1,572 white-sided or white-beaked dolphins, 274 killer whales, 77 fin whales, 57 northern bottlenose whales, 49 humpback whales and 2 bowhead whales.<\/p>\n
The quota for narwhal in 2013 was 398 and in 2023 it was 654. As a reminder, only males have tusks. Despite the decline of the species, quotas are increasing. On the international market, black or official, the ivory tusk of a narwhal sells for between 10,000 and 35,000 US$ depending on its length. In the restaurants of Nuuk, the skin and blubber of narwhal, beluga, bowhead or fin whales are served under the name of “mattak”.<\/p>\n
The Kingdom of Denmark allowed in the special autonomous region of the Faroe Islands between 2013 and 2023 the harvest of 7,079 long-finned pilot whales, 2,623 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, 98 common bottlenose dolphins and 33 northern bottlenose whales.<\/p>\n
It is therefore not surprising that Japan, the propagandist (with Norway) of whale meat, and Denmark are as thick as thieves to imprison one of the historic defenders of whales and marine mammals and request his extradition.<\/p>\n
The transfer of Paul Watson to Japan, handcuffed and gagged, would be an inhumane but also a political catastrophe for Denmark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
