These were the first 2 seizures observed in Libya since the July 2013 publication of \u201cOn the trail\u201d n\u00b01, the bulletin of Robin des Bois dedicated to poaching and smuggling endangered animal species.<\/p>\n<p>They prove that despite the political and social chaos, wildlife is not completely left to the devices of traffickers and militia. The 2 vehicles were heading to Egypt. The first reports show that the 200 tortoises in the minibus were collected in the desert to the south of Tripoli. Not long ago, its distribution range included Libya and\u00a0 Egypt.\u00a0 Except\u00a0 for\u00a0 a\u00a0 few\u00a0 isolated\u00a0 individuals,\u00a0 these\u00a0 tortoises\u00a0 have\u00a0 disappeared\u00a0 from\u00a0 Egypt.\u00a0 Its\u00a0 last known\u00a0 habitats were the coastal deserts of Tripolitania, in the western part of the country, and Cyrenaica, in the eastern part.\u00a0 Kleinmann\u2019s\u00a0 tortoises\u00a0 need\u00a0 the\u00a0 moisture\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 Mediterranean\u00a0 Sea\u00a0 brings.\u00a0 In\u00a0 the\u00a0 scorching heat\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 day,\u00a0 and\u00a0 on\u00a0 cold\u00a0 nights,\u00a0 the\u00a0 tortoises\u00a0 bury\u00a0 themselves\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 burrows\u00a0 that\u00a0 small\u00a0 mammals\u00a0 have\u00a0 abandoned. Kleinmann\u2019s tortoises are vegetarian, but if necessary, they eat insects and the excrement of desert rodents. A female Kleinmann\u2019s tortoise lays 5 eggs, with an incubation period of 20 days. Kleinmann\u2019s tortoises have camouflage that is almost military. Unfortunately, this is not enough to spare it from the international pet market.
