The container ship and car carrier had left Hamburg and was heading for Casablanca, then Dakar (Senegal), Conakry (Guinea), and Freetown (Sierra Leone). Afterwards, the ship was to carry on towards Brazil. The Grande America<\/em> is 214 meters long and she flies the Italian flag. Logically, the ship is filled with used cars and a variety of second-hand vehicles, trailers, public work machinery, waste to be recycled, trailers loaded with tires, and containers with dangerous material to be used by West African major development projects or mines.<\/p>\n

Aware that the marine casualty had been developing since 8 P.M. last night, the Robin des Bois and Mor Glaz associations, based in Paris and Brest, are already asking the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture about the measures being considered to control the fire and avoid a shipwreck, and, if the Grande America<\/em> is towable, which port or place of refuge has been designated. The ship, built in 1997, was detained in 2010 for 35 deficiencies in the Port of Tilbury, United Kingdom. Since then, maritime safety inspectors from Hamburg and Antwerp have regularly identified other deficiencies.<\/p>\n
