Elephants and Ivories

Orangutans always knocked down
The orangutans are brought down by palm oil, clearing fires and retaliation from small and large producers. The rescuers do not know which way to turn and during these months of ashes and want for the adult and baby orangutans, the Nutella maker poses in a suit with a big smile on the front page: “We’re coming out of the Covid-19 crisis even stronger. During the stay at home order, we all ate Nutella”. The orangutans hate it. To be found pages 66 to 68.

Elephant calves trade : forcing through before the market closes

Update 3:30 p.m.: after a 13-hour flight, the 32 calves arrived in Shanghai in an unknown condition. Temperature on boarding: 38°C. Temperature on arrival: 19°C.

Yesterday, 32 elephant calves were exfiltrated by a Saudia Airlines cargo plane from the Victoria Falls airport in Zimbabwe to China. The plane made a night stopover in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The calves’ final destination is business classified. It is probable that one of the beneficiaries of the calves used as attractive product is the Guangzhou safari park, where uninformed visitors can already admire elephants suffering from PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder) due to their violent capture, the separation with their family and captivity.

CITES CoP18 Press release n°1

The 18th meeting of the Conference of the 184 Parties (CoP) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora – CITES – is meeting in Geneva from 17 to 28 August 2019. Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), the Paris based NGO, has been an observer at CITES for 30 years. This conference was scheduled to be held in Colombo in May-June 2019. It was postponed and then moved to Switzerland due to the April 21 attacks in Sri Lanka.
Will CITES prove that it is competent to coordinate the international cooperation against environmental crime and resist the siren song of the wildlife extinction capitalism?
Will CITES Parties finally recognize that wild animals are No Border and that species such as giraffes and elephants should have the right to move across political and administrative boundaries?
