The proposal by Chad, Senegal, Niger, the Central African Republic, Kenya and Mali to monitor the international trade of living giraffes as well as skins, paws, hairs, tails, skulls and other parts of the fallen queen of savanna was accepted by 106 votes in favour, 21 against and 7 abstentions.

Giraffes are in freefall. Their listing to CITES’ Appendix II will be reviewed in Geneva this week. For hunters, zoos as well as animal skulls or exotic carpets lovers, giraffes are still freely accessible, without any administrative hassle.

The 18th meeting of the Conference of the 184 Parties (CoP) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora – CITES – is meeting in Geneva from 17 to 28 August 2019. Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), the Paris based NGO, has been an observer at CITES for 30 years. This conference was scheduled to be held in Colombo in May-June 2019. It was postponed and then moved to Switzerland due to the April 21 attacks in Sri Lanka.
Will CITES prove that it is competent to coordinate the international cooperation against environmental crime and resist the siren song of the wildlife extinction capitalism?
Will CITES Parties finally recognize that wild animals are No Border and that species such as giraffes and elephants should have the right to move across political and administrative boundaries?

Notre-Dame de Paris, press release n°4

The Ministry of Culture, owner of Notre-Dame de Paris, has confirmed the shaky condition of the vault and flying buttresses of the cathedral. The scaffolding, which is covered with lead dusts and has until then withstood the collapse of the spire and the aftermath of the fire, is also under threat of downfall.

Therefore, Robin des Bois feels it is necessary to clarify the current prefectural decree on the imminent collapsing threat and to enforce, as part of this decree, a ban on all pedestrian traffic and all activities, especially business-related, on the rue du Cloître-Notre-Dame. A partial or complete collapse of the cathedral’s vault would cause other parts of the building to cave in, create an out-of-control cloud of contaminated dusts and a panic reaction, especially during the touristic peak hours.
