Wanted : BBC Shanghai

8 Dec 2015

After unloading on December 5 in Australia what she had loaded on October 14 in France, the BBC Shanghai, an occasional nuclear waste carrier, is now heading for Shanghai. Her owner is German. She is flying the Antigua & Barbuda flag. Her profile is alarming. As soon as she is calling in a port, the BBC Shanghai is targeted by maritime authorities and submitted to a detailed inspection.

When she turns up in Australia, the BBC Shanghai is usually kept a close watch on. She was even detained in Gladstone in 2014 pending the correction of serious deficiencies. This time, Australia got rid of her quickly, without any inspection of her seaworthiness and without any radiological control. During her 25,000 km voyage along with 25 tons of radioactive waste, the holds of the BBC Shanghai may have been irradiated or contaminated.

Robin des Bois wishes Shanghai Port Authorities will be particularly watchful towards BBC Shanghai and will monitor the health condition of the international crew.

When she left Australia, BBC Shanghai was initially bound for Singapore. There are many shipbreaking yards in the Shanghai area.
