Plundering, Trade and Cruelty

KO and Ciao abalones (Haliotis spp.) – p.5
On August 7, the South African Department of Fisheries discontinued the granting of fishing licenses. Abalone catching falls into the hands of Cape Town gangs and the Chinese mafia. On the local marketplace, the price per kg has hit $400 US. It was $40 US in 2008. Violence and corruption are almost alone to flank the exploitation and then smuggling of the marine gastropods. Even the farms are looted.
The European Union, and in particular France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, would be well-advised to carefully examine this black market, which started originally from recreational and subsistence fishing. They can learn from this example, in order to prevent the extinction of abalone and other rocks and tidal flats dependent species.

De-Frog Us- Pages 25 to 26
For the French stakeholders at international conventions concerning the protection of whales, wetlands and endangered animal species, the question regarding the addiction to frog legs always comes up. Even at the end of the world, it always returns to us like a boomerang. The frozen frog legs sold in Picard, the French supermarkets specializing in frozen foods, come from Indonesia under a misnomer and the French State, under the direction of the prefect of Franche-Comté, the froggiest region in France, authorizes the capture of two million frogs each year.

The Indian government has published a cohabitation guide between leopards and populations. Covering more than 3 million km2, India has 1,3 billion inhabitants and 10,000 to 12,000 leopards. 30 to 40 fatal accidents following attacks would occur each year. The guide explores all means of reducing conflicts, gives all the keys of the leopard behavior and gives clear instructions to forestry services. Do not kill, at worst anesthetize. On the contrary, the French parliament has just strengthened the legal capacity to kill wolves. There are about 300 of them on 550,000 km2. Enraged politicians organized a wolf and bearhunting in the rows of the National Assembly. The Senate was also stormed by Wolfcatchers Royals. The verbatim are overwhelming. Nothing about the positive contributions of the wolves. The watchword is to eradicate them as if the wolf was a disease. See page 58 and pages 72-73.

A New Era for Elephants

30 Dec 2016

The Chinese government decides to close its domestic ivory market. As a first step, on 31 March 2017 at the latest, approved ivory processing workshops will no longer have the right to engage in this activity. Secondly, by December 31, 2017, approved retail ivory stores will have to abandon this market. These workshops and stores were supplied with “legal” ivory from some Southern African countries and ivory poached across the African continent.
The reconversion of workshops and stores will be assisted.
The fight against raw and carved ivories smuggling and clandestine ivory workshops will be strengthened.
Consumer information will be increased to “create a propitious environment for the protection of elephants, other wild fauna and flora” according to the Chinese government’s announcement.
“For cultural reasons”, the only authorised commercial activity involving ivory will be the auction of certified antiques.

To save the donkeys from the Chinese predators

To save the donkeys from the Chinese predators

A tremendous boom in donkey skin exports towards China from northern to southern Africa has been noticed over the last year. The countries hit the most are Egypt, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa. In Egypt, one donkey was sold 17 € two years ago and 170 € today.
Burkina Faso is the symbol of this sudden persecution.
– 1st quarter 2015: 1000 skins exported.
– 4th quarter 2015: 18.000 skins.
– 1st half of the year 2016: 65.000 skins.
